Thank you for your interest in joining us on the Canadian Father Son wilderness adventure.
Due to the increased demand over the last few years the board of the Wilhite Wilderness Children’s Ministry has decided to change our first come first served policy to an application process. This was not an easy decision as we would love to see all fathers and sons have the opportunity to experience this life changing adventure.
Last year the registration period lasted only five days and we had almost twice as many sign up than we could take.
After the registration was closed, we heard of a number of others who missed the initial announcement and did not have a chance to register. The reality is that we can only take 28 father and sons and still provide a quality experience.
For this reason, we on the board are instituting an application process. This letter will explain the details, expectation and costs. If after reading these details you would like to participate, the application is attached. Please fill it out completely and carefully. We will be using the information to make the best decisions possible. We will give special consideration to those who have not been able to go in the past and those from New Life Church.
This is not an automatic guarantee as we will be considering the ages of the boys, a balance of experience verses new guys and reasons stated for wanting to go.
Our timeline is as follows.
- Applications will be accepted through April 15th, 2011.
- The board will make our decision on who is accepted during February.
- Those accepted will need to pay a minimum deposit of $300 per person as soon as they have been accepted.
- Failure to do so will forfeit your place on the trip and it will be given to another so be prepared.
- The balance of the cost, $600 per person, will be due no later than April 15, 2011.
- The trip will take place June 10 to 18, 2011.
The cost of $600 is an increase over the last few years. If this is a hardship we have some scholarship money available. Please see Jeff Turner to apply. We try to hold the cost down so that it will not prevent fathers and sons from going but our costs are increasing. Last year the real cost for the trip was $750 per person. The difference was made up by the Wilhite Wilderness Children’s Ministry funds made possible by generous donations.
If you were to purchase this type of trip from a Canadian outfitter, it would cost at least $1,500 per person and not include your transportation to Canada.
Additional requirements for fathers and sons are as follows. All fathers must read the booklet explaining the history and purpose of the ministry.
Fathers and sons must together read and discuss a father son book (determined by the age of the son), before leaving on the trip.
During the 25 hour drive to we will spend some time discussing father son relationships and how fathers can help their sons grow and become godly men.
- We will discuss what God expects from young men as they grow into adulthood.
- You must have a passport.
- If you are age 16 or older by June 19, 2011, you must purchase a Canadian fishing license.
- Meals on the road are your responsibility.
This year we will be stopping at a hotel on the return trip home to get some sleep for about 5-6 hours or so. This expense of this hotel will be picked up by the WWCM foundation and we should be back in Denver by 5-7 pm Saturday night.
